Studies consistently show that classroom design matters to how children engage, participate and ultimately stay involved in their learning experience. I believe classroom environments should be open to collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking. This cannot be done in traditional row-by-column seating. Our transition to a student-centered classroom will support different modes of learning in order to keep children engaged in in their education. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment. Flex Space comfy floor seats, sitting lap desks, and balance ball seats will allow students to choose their location and positions as needed. Students can find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen and blood flow and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. I will utilize flexible space seating as a non-disruptive solution for my individual students who tend to move during direct instruction. Small groups will be able to use flexible seating during reader’s workshop to read in small groups and have peer-to-peer discussion. Last, but not least, flexible seating will be used during one-on-one instruction as well. Please consider a donation to help create a more active, engaged, enthusiastic, and relaxed room of students!
