This will greatly enhance the learning of a very important part of California history. Having a set of "By the Great Horn Spoon" books will add to and give a precise historical look at the life and times during the California Gold Rush. We do an extensive study of the Gold Rush and the book brings this period to life. We learn about how people got to California, the conditions they lived in, and how it changed the history of California. The students look at how people traveled here by sea and land. They experience through the story the reality of what people went through to get to the gold fields. They ultimately learn about the perserverance of the people in this historical example. The kids love to correlate what they have learned in real history with this lively and captivating novel.
