Printmaking is a foundational skill in elementary art, that will build passion and inspiration for students to take future art classes and even create art on their own. Without access to higher-grade materials and tools, students' learning and experiences in art are limited to basic ideas with limited opportunities for inquiry and experimentation. Gell printing plates are the most versatile material for printmaking because students can explore a variety of methods, techniques, colors, and textures in one place! The use of texture plates, along with household materials like string or netting, and outdoor collected items like leaves, grass, flowers, seeds, etc. provide opportunities for students to engage in the use of texture and experiment with the artistic process.
