My students run a coffee business from the transition apartment. They make and serve lattes, tea and coffee to staff members in the attached building. Students are involved in every aspect of this business, including marketing, sales and customer relations.
Students are interested in expanding their business to other schools within the district on a rotating schedule. This will require students to have additional coffee gear, as well as the necessary equipment for transport from school to school.
Since starting this small coffee business last year, I have seen an increase in confidence in all of my students. Students have improved social, communication and money management skills. They have built rapport with their customers. They have learned what it is like to have "coworkers." Students take pride in being a part of this business.
The products I have selected will help my students to grow their business, allowing for more opportunities for hands-on learning, as it relates to employment and independent living.
