The novels I am requesting are special. They are written for students learning a new language. When a student first picks up a novel in Spanish they hesitantly walk up to the library section, and hesitantly open the cover of a book or two, fearing that their limited language knowledge will make it impossible for them to understand an entire book. The true magic of these novels is that they are written to be comprehensible for even the most novice of students. For many students, reading these novels and understanding them is the first big accomplishment that sets them up to feel confident in their ability to learn a foreign language. At the opposite end of the spectrum, an advanced Spanish student has read many novels every year, each slightly more challenging, and in the process they acquire an impressive amount of language from the comprehensible input that these novels provide. In order for this process to be effective, I have to provide students with reading material that is compelling and just at their level or slightly above it. This creates the need to have a variety of novels at different levels so that all students can feel successful when reading in Spanish. My upper-level Spanish students are ready for more advanced reading material. The group of novels I selected will provide my upper-level Spanish students with class sets of novels that are at their level or just above it. The individual books I selected, will also allow students in lower level Spanish classes to have a free choice reading time, where they select a Spanish book that is interesting to them and read it in class for personal enrichment and enjoyment.
