Meeting the needs of a classroom full of diverse learners is a challenge. I have developed a large leveled classroom library that allows students access to a variety of books at their individual levels. This library is used exhaustively throughout the day; however, it is not robust enough at every reading level to provide all the access to text that students need. It is not uncommon for a 2nd grade classroom to have a 3- to 4-year span of reading ability level. It is important for the young readers at either end of that span, both struggling and advanced, to have the same access to reading material as their peers reading on grade level. In recent years, the internet has exploded with resources designed to address this very issue. Websites like Epic provide free classroom access to tens of thousands of books of any genre. Regardless of reading ability, students can access books at their level related to any interest or topic they choose--provided they have computer access. Access is a challenge in our school, with only two computer labs and three iPad carts serving 23 classes consisting of nearly 500 students. This project would put ten Chromebooks in my classroom, giving students a literal library of resources at their fingertips. The ready availability of such a wealth of information would ensure that every student, regardless of reading ability, could access the world through books of every genre.
