My classroom utilizes a guided learning approach to mathematics and reading. While I am meeting individually or in small groups, I want to ensure that the remaining students are equally engaged in learning, application and practice. Having engaging centers ensures that my students are working on authentic and meaningful learning and practice while I am meeting with small groups in order to best differentiate learning for our diverse learners. Math and Literacy Centers provide my students with hands-on, spiral review with skills that have been introduced and taught during our Guided Math and Reading groups. Students will be able to practice sentence creation by utilizing Reading Rods and Sentence Building Dominoes as well as develop further understanding of sentence structure with the Silly Sentences game. Games like Pop, Splat and Super Genius help students practice reading sight words in order to better develop fluency. Each game and tool can be differentiated for the various levels of need in my classroom. Math games including Mobi, Sequence, and Math for Love Prime Club help my students engage in math talk with their peers while practicing fluency. Engaging centers that include manipulative tools and games provide students with the opportunity to work with peers to talk about their thinking, apply vocabulary and skills, and learn from others.
