An anchor text is a grade level text read aloud which provides a place for class thinking. It “anchors” the learning that will come in future lessons. Usually, we have a class set that is shared between two classes I would see in a day; students follow along but are not able to underline because we need to reuse them. While there are many things that we can recreate online, the feeling of holding a book is not one. Funding this project will allow me to send home two books for each of my 7th and 8th grade students to begin the year with. Students would be able to follow along as I read aloud on a Google Meet, underlining and annotating in the margins, as a real reader does with his or her own books. I would use sections of the text to teach grade level content through mini lessons. This book would be their own to keep, treasure, and read again and again; the beginning of a library at home. The middle grade literacy teachers at Corkery have been reading all summer. We made a goal to find texts that better represent our students; texts that are culturally relevant so that our students are able to see themselves in the curriculum. These texts will allow us to teach the Common Core Standards while connecting to the background and experiences of our students, displaying their history and culture. The students will see themselves reflected within the texts, while learning about the experiences of others. Refugee, Ghost Boys, One Crazy Summer, and Echo are all books students can relate to, while also introducing them to new cultures.
