This year has been a trying year for my students; many of my students were facing financial hardships prior to Hurricane Harvey and a lot of them lost everything due to the Hurricane. After this tragic event, I started a student ambassador club which develops young adults into positive role models that focus on creating a school environment that makes students feel like they belong to a community. These are the future leaders of our community. In addition, I am focusing on teaching them the power of putting others before themselves. One of our outreach missions at the school is to encourage students that are struggling with different issues, we are doing this by distributing pick-me-up bags that will include items that will make them smile and inspirational quotes. We originally set a goal of fifty students, after reaching out to the staff asking for names of students that needed a pick-me-up within minutes, we received over seventy names. We want every student in the school that is facing a struggle to receive a pick-me-up bag with words of encouragement and some special treats. How a student feels when at school is directly linked to how they perform in the classroom. Imagine being that student whose mom is dying of cancer and you get a delivery in class with a bag of treats and a uplifting message. Or your house burned down or you find out your parents are getting a divorce or you have been evicted from your home. These are just a few of the struggles students face. It might be just a small act of kindness but it will have a big impact on the students because they know that we care and we are here for them.
