In addition to full time teaching responsibilities for 22 Dual Immersion 5th grade students, I am the volunteer Bandmaster for a small group of 3rd through 6th graders who are trying to re-establish a long-lost band program in our K-8, 342 student elementary school. We work under the direction of a non-profit volunteer group of parents who are active in the Dual Immersion program Our school work is in both Spanish and English and we expect that our band will reflect our bi-literate focus. Our goal is to grow to about 35 members and perform at school and community events through out the school year. We have discovered a few instruments hiding in closets and have been actively fund raising so we can purchase more and refurbish others that still have a possible future. However, we are still seriously short of achieving our goal of 35 members. It is hard to recruit new members when we have no instruments for them.
