The supplies I am requesting for my sensory room will make a safe and comfortable space for my students to go to self-regulate and organize their nervous systems. The carpet's texture is soft and plush for bare feet, and the colors are blue and green which are calming. The chairs can be used to alert the students with low muscle tone and provide the necessary movement they may seek and need to be calm and organized to attend.
My students often get overwhelmed by sensory stimulation that most people don't notice such as the humming of an air conditioner or the smells from the cafeteria. This can send them into crisis.
A sensory room offers the students a nurturing, supportive environment. It will be used to facilitate empowerment, self-organization, relaxation, sensory awareness, activity tolerance and general awareness of self, peers and the environment. It will be a place to practice strategies such as yoga and mindfulness.
