I am a veteran teacher looking to provide a world music experience to my students for the first time! We are working together to build our collection of instruments so my students can have a diverse array of experiences when making music. I have little experience with world drumming, and I am looking to grow as an educator by offering something new and exciting to my students. We need more tubano drums in order to have this new experience in a safe, socially distant way! Currently, the music classroom shares four tubano drums between about 24 students per class. As we navigate the needs of students in meeting standards and grade-level expectations, these drums would be used to encourage socially distant music-making. The older students are excited to learn the basics of drumming and are looking for frequent opportunities to safely apply those skills. Playing instruments helps build fine and gross motor skills, while also helping students learn to play, read, and experience music. With a wider variety of instruments, students will be able to find musical opportunities that resonate with them. Having more tubanos will not only allow me to give students a different way to experience music, but also will better allow me to teach music efficiently and effectively while being required to clean materials between student use. Having more tubano drums would help us be safer!
