Flexible seating helps enable children to be more comfortable than in a normal classroom desk-style environment. Students with ADHD or kinestetic learners who need extra movement throughout the day benefit from yoga ball style seating. Some of my students feel more comfortable on the floor, away from the gaze of their peers. When students are comfortable, the learn better. By allowing my students to choose their seating, they are able to focus on when I'm teaching and not on how they feel like they don't belong. Often times my students come from a background where they've been told they are incapable, behind others, or stupid. A lot of what I teach in the classroom is about gaining self-confidence and the will to keep trying. When something bad happens to you, you tend to shut down in similar situations. When alternative seating is available, they don't feel like they are in a place they've been before.
