I have an eager set of 6th graders. Every day, we read from novels and short stories of different genres: fiction, sci-Fi, historical fiction, fantasy, media, poetry, and non-fiction. We compare and contrast universal themes and challenge ingrained social ideas. And they are only 11! I've been blessed with thoughtful, open-minded students who have come to like reading. Unfortunately, novel replacement has not been in the school's budget for the past couple of years. Putting together a decent class set is becoming increasingly difficult. What our students don't have are complete novel sets. The paperback novels we do have are worn from the 10-15 years of students before them. Covers are ripped, torn, missing pages, bandaged, re-ripped to the point where delicate page-turning results in surgical repair. The students have prided themselves upon the ability to keep repairing and reusing books that are beyond help, but would really value a nice, fresh book to read.
