Finding books that you love and topics that interest you is crucial to staying engaged in reading. My students have all explored their reading territories this year and are learning that - even if they don't like a book - they all love to read something. Before sending these 8th graders to high school, I want them each to feel competent as readers and get lost in that magical world of reading. Students have pushed themselves to explore different genres and topics and have amazed even themselves. By ensuring that all my students have books that engage them, I know that I'm fostering a love of learning that will stretch far beyond the walls of my 8th grade classroom. Independent reading respects the individuality and autonomy of all learners and gives each student a space to choose their own adventure. Hearing students laugh out loud from a funny line, cry when something sad happens, or enthusiastically recommend a favorite book to a friend fills the school community with joy and a sense of pleasure in reading. These books will help 90 students on their quests of self-discovery and support many students to come in their love of learning.
