Next month, our school is going to do our first "One Book, One School" where every student and staff are reading the same book throughout the school. Our first will be Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Another plan is that since we will all be reading the same book, we all will have something in common that we can talk about whether it be on the playground, during PE, at lunch, etc. We plan to bring in other activities with the reading of this book. One activity I plan to do is make chocolate with my students so they can see how you melt chocolate and put it into molds to create a design on chocolate. We also plan to decorate the school's hallway like the chocolate factory in the book. Prior to coming to my classroom, many of my students did not enjoy reading. I started doing read aloud with my students and now they get upset when we don't have time to read our book. Once we read a book, they are asking what are we reading next or asking can we read the other books in the series or by the same author. They are starting to love reading and I want them to share their love of reading with others. Since we are doing the "One Book, One School" project, I want my students to have their own copy of the book so they can go down to the lower grades and read with them. I want them to pass their love of reading onto others. What a perfect way to encourage younger students to read by seeing the older students, whom they look up to, reading to them. How cool is that?
