I have the most awesome students, funny and clever, yet the best two meals they get every day are at school. I teach in a low-income community with a soaring high school drop out rate. As a teacher, I need to make a long-lasting impression on them so that they can be self sufficient and not depend on the government to support them. I think it is essential that they learn real-life common sense problem solving so that they will one day be able to break the cycle of poverty in which they live. “Give a man a fish; you have fed him for a today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.” –Chinese Parable.
