When students come to school each day, they are expected to be prepared, to attend, to focus, and to strive for excellence in their academics. We as educators know that before they can do that, their basic needs must be met. They need to be rested, fed, clean, and safe. For the students whose homes cannot provide for their basic needs, having a place that they can get those things that is easy, discreet, free, and accessible creates the opportunity to move past basic needs and focus on achievement. Our wonderful local community has been very generous in donating clothing and shoes for all our needy families, but funding has been limited to purchase toiletries. Our care closet will be better able to fully meet the needs of the families it serves with help from this project. Our wish list includes basic toiletries such as shampoo, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, underwear, and pull ups. When students can come to school in clothes that fit and are clean, it removes barriers to them making friends, participating fully in activities, and focusing wholeheartedly on their learning.
