Our school is over 100 years old, but we don't want our ELA curriculum to be! Middle grades were only added to the campus in the last 6 years and though our textbook room has plenty of Hemingway and Shakespeare, it lacks 21st century literature for middle readers. One old-school value that teachers in our program share is that it is good for students to hold books in their hands- not everything needs to be online just because the pandemic has made computers more accessible. We also value stories that excite reluctant readers and have chosen literature that we believe will build reading skills as well as generate valuable insights about life and how we live it.
