I teach vocal music at a large (more than 3000) highly diverse, urban high school in Indiana. My students are in grades 9-12 but a majority of my students are ninth graders. In my beginning Women's Choir more than one-fourth of the class has some type of special need. Additionally more than a fourth of the class has English as their second language. More than 60 percent of this class is on free or reduced lunch. Many in the class are aspiring to become the first members in their family to attend college. The purpose of our choir class is to provide the students an opportunity to excel in school, prepare for future auditions for higher level ensembles, musical theater productions, solo opportunities, college scholarships and vocal competitions. The students in this choir do not have the financial resources for private music instruction The students get all their vocal training through our choir class.
