When I ask the students in my class to find a book to read silently, they run over to my bookshelf, pick a book, and make their way back to their desk. At first glance, they seem interested in what they are reading, but if you look closely, you'll notice they just thumb through the pages, filling time glancing at the pictures because I told them it was what they were supposed to do. It is usually within three minutes that they stand back up, head back to the bookshelf, and find another book to mindlessly flip through. However, with the right resources, I can provide students the key that unlocks a lifelong love of reading. Providing the right books, the kind that draws the attention of a student, is key to getting them to love reading. If I were able to get a kick start on my classroom library, I could get my students on a path of higher literacy.
