If students are not interested in what they are reading, they don't want to read. Scholastic Scope magazine provides high interest text in multiple genres, provides writing lessons and opportunities, and asks students to think critically about what they are reading. They will learn to read closely, to analyze text, to write about what they are reading, and to connect what they read to their own lives. Many of the articles in Scholastic Scope also have historical content, so students will also gain knowledge of historical events. Scholastic Scope subscriptions are expensive for students and our school is very small so items like this don't find their way into the budget. Without a grant, my students will not have exposure to this type of text. However, with the use of this magazine subscription in my classrooms, my students will become better readers, writers, and thinkers.
