I work with at-risk high school students who are 2 - 4 years below grade level in their ability to do mathematics. The students want to learn but have not been successful in a large high school. Our public school is small and dedicated to helping our students learn, succeed, and graduate. As a staff, we spend many hours before school, during lunch and after school, tutoring our students. We have high academic standards. Our students do not get credit for a class unless they have a "C". This is a higher expectation than the regular high schools in our district. We also follow the same curriculum. Working with at-risk students, requires more hands-on activities and the handhelds (calculators) provide that experience. There are animated activities that demonstrate hard to teach hard to learn mathematical concepts. With the TI Navigator System, I am able to do formative assessments quickly to see how my students are doing. With more handhelds (calculators), every student will have one.
