Kids who are great and not-so-great readers love books that reflect their reality. Students in my classes get bored easily, and it's no wonder. Many of the titles chosen for middle school students are dated and often discuss things they know nothing about. By choosing relevant, meaningful titles my students will see themselves, and see why reading is important. Something as simple as selecting up-to-date "real" books supports strong and weak readers to finally engage in something they think is important. Students in the 21st century deserve to read things that support and stretch their ability to think critically, and thoughtfully, about important topics.
