A 2003 study by the American Journal of Occupational Therapy proved that students who were able to use stability ball chairs were able to sit still, focus, and write more words clearly. Mayo Clinic in seconded those findings in 2007 with a study. In the Mayo study, which focused on improving learning and reducing obesity by making children more active, researchers found that the ability to move around more while sitting made the students more attentive. The goal for my students is keep them focused and active as we continue on our journey to developing a solid English vocabulary. I am fortunate enough to get longer class periods to help with language development needs of my students. However, expecting a twelve year old to sit in a hard plastic chair for an extended period of time is not only inappropriate but also detrimental to their learning. Over the course of the year, I have been bringing in various flexible seating options and have seen an improvement with their learning. I would like to offer more choices to my students! Stability balls also have the added bonus of keeping kids active. We work daily on a healthy mind, but we do need some extra support on a healthy body. Using stability balls in the classroom is a really easy way to incorporate that into our daily routines.
