In Math 2 Honors and Math 3, students learn to use a compass for what it was designed - constructions of angles, angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, polygons, and other basic geometric figures. Students are usually unfamiliar with the use of a compass, except for using it to draw circles. We also specifically use these constructions to help develop theorems related to special segments in triangles and the angle measures in polygons. Lessons in Geometry dealing with constructions help students to see applications of geometric concepts outside the classroom. Many of the compasses that I currently have for use in the classroom are over 15 years old and are in very bad shape - students need to have access to newer compasses in order to make constructions easier to learn and less time consuming. I also included basic consumables in this project since many of my students may begin the school year with a set of school supplies but those are never replenished throughout the year.
