Last year, one of our teachers asked several of our female students what they needed here at school that they couldn't get at home. Overwhelmingly, they said sanitary products for menstruation. The staff member posted a request for these supplies on DonorsChoose.org and it was funded. Another staff member put plastic baskets filled with hygiene products in each girls' bathroom. In less than a year, our female students have used more than 500 maxipads. When we asked why they don't have access to these things at home, their answers varied from "My mom doesn't buy any," to "Food stamps doesn't cover pads" to "I only carry a backpack when I move from house to house." I believe my students will do better in school when their basic needs are met.
