Movement for every student is necessary, as it is for every adult. Students with disabilities, especially those identified as having Autism, often need more movement throughout their day, especially when learning. Most of my students, especially those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, suffer from sensory processing difficulties. From an outsider, these students may look as if they have challenging behaviors and/or are labeled as being "bad." They may constantly run around the room, jump up and down, and/or rock back and forth. Sitting "still" is not an option for them, not because they are "bad," but because of their body, specifically their central nervous system, processes sensations inefficiently. Their brain is telling their body that they need to move to be okay. I understand that. We all need to move, especially when being asked to sit for any period of time. With these various "wobble stools," my students will be given the opportunities to "sit" and engage in academic and/or social encounters because while they are "sitting," they are able to wobble back and forth, side to side, and/or in a circular motion! How cool is that! Several of my other students prefer to sit on a soft beanbag when learning. I get that too! How many of us like to lay on a cozy soft bean bag when reading a favored book? I do! Some of my students do too! Sensory processing challenges do not have to be limiting for them. With these flexible seating stools and bean bags, my students will be able to "sit" and wobble their way to a better education and future!
