My classroom is an active art making environment. It is a colorful, creative space that allows students to get inventive, and a little messy. However, it is also a place where we do serious learning. As a part of the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Arts Learning Program, it is my job to integrate the arts into the core curriculum that all of my students are learning. The result is a STEAM classroom in which we relate visual art to standards in science, math, reading, and social studies. My classroom also serves a large number of diverse students. I teach at two different elementary schools in two different towns, and I teach the entire student body of each school. As a result I come into contact with students of multiple nationalities, from different socioeconomic backgrounds, who speak a variety of languages, and who have special needs. The art classroom is a place where everyone is invited to participate.
