My students have little access to diverse cultures and experiences, as we are located in a rural area of North Carolina. Many of my students do not read for pleasure, at all. Our school novel resources are very limited, as well. I require my students to read an independent novel every week, throughout their time with me. I need a greater selection of diverse novels that can appeal to all types and levels of young adult readers. I cannot reach them if I cannot find a way to interest them. If I were to get funded, I would add all the books I have selected to our school's department library. That way, all students in ALL English classes will benefit from these novels, not just my own students. We do not have a school library, and sadly, very few students of ours ever use the public library.
