When we think about curriculum in public schools, many often think about reading, math, science and social studies. In our district we are no exception to the many initiatives that come along to help improve our test scores in these areas and to help prepare our students for college and career. We have learned through working with our students that there is more we can do to support them through social-emotional lessons that will lead to success in the typical curriculum. There is only so much learning that can happen when a student does not have the skills necessary to self-regulate, express needs, relate to others and feel self-worth. Through our new curriculum we are adopting, paired with the texts that we are requesting, students will learn to build their emotional intelligence. They will also work on developing a growth mindset, better relationships, self-management and social awareness. Above all, the new curriculum helps to teach kindness and compassion through texts such as Listening With My Heart. We plan to integrate this curriculum daily so that students are learning and practicing these ideals throughout their day. We will have a cohesive curriculum taught throughout the year as well as units that build on each other as students move on to the next grade. We truly feel that this type of learning and support are crucial for our students to be successful, not only in career and college, but has happy, healthy human beings.
