In order for these children to achieve their full potential, in school and in life, they must learn to read. I have the great honor of introducing these little minds to the wonders of books! The sudden grin on the face of a child who finally understands is truly priceless, and it is a joy for both of us. Kindergarteners need to touch a real book, place a finger on the letters, connect to the sounds and rhythms of language. We look carefully at the differences in words, letter sounds, sentence patterns, and picture clues. They need this interaction every day. It is only with repeated exposure and practice that students can truly master this skill. Reading is the skill that guides all knowledge, from science to history to literature. With daily practice and a lot of hard work, even children who come into the world at a disadvantage can become excellent readers. Or scientists. Or Presidents.
