I teach American Sign Language (ASL) to Deaf students in Fremont. My school fully supports a bilingual approach for both ASL and English. However, while on the school campus students communicate primarily with ASL. Some students are local but many live far away and have to board at school for the week. Some students have been here since kindergarten all the way to until they have graduated high school. Other students transfer from mainstream or regular schools into our school and take formal ASL lessons, not aware of how sophisticated a language ASL is. Most of the teachers on the school campus are also Deaf. We also have hearing administrators, teachers and staff who use ASL at all times. The goal is for students to graduate with a strong education, good experience, and the ability to thrive and succeed in the world.
