My higher achieving reading scholars will learn about many of the little known women who helped our country advance the space program. In addition to reading the text, annotating NEWSELA informational articles, watching BrainPop and YouTube videos, the students will apply what they are reading and learn to launch rockets, design and race pinewood race cars and design and fly paper airplanes. Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of then unknown female mathematicians used pencils, slide rules and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. This project will not only help my scholars develop reading skills through a high level-high interest text (Lexile 1120), they will investigate science, mathematics, gender equality, racial prejudice and perseverance.
