As an educator I am required to create an atmosphere of learning for my students. I must have my writing center equipped with pencils, paper, examples of various writing styles, in addition to a table and chair for students to complete assignments. The same is for my guided reading and math centers. After close observation of my students ever changing emotional and behavior patterns, I soon realized there was another center, aka "Oasis" I could provide. My first graders enter the classroom every morning upset, anxious, tired and distraught. It requires a lot patience, love and creativity to assure students that our classroom is a safe space to learn, share and express ourselves. The supplies I requested will be the catalysts for creating such a space. The positive, encouraging posters I selected will be eye catching. The educational, yet fluffy rugs will be clean and invite students to sit upon them. And the cuddly, soft pillows and chairs will solidify the thoughtful and authentic space created only support that their students needs. The requested beverages and snacks would also serve a great purpose as our school doesn't have working water fountains and the students are always thirsty. And who doesn't want to relax, reset and reflect in a place made especially for that purpose? Especially if they can enjoy a refreshing drink and light snack. These would help to ease some of the stomach rumblings that many of my students suffer from.
