As an artist and art teacher, I believe high school students should be exposed to and trained to use professional grade materials. Professional materials can lead to professional level results and learning pleasure from the very beginning of artistic practice and thinking.
CPHS staff seek student “Voice and Choice” embedded into all lessons, to encourage a love of learning. Students with block watercolor paper can work anywhere as painting masters like Winslow Homer did. They kids will not be limited to the classroom but can choose their subject setting. Working from direct observation not only develops visual arts skills; science observation is improved; relationships between objects is better understood. Understanding relationships allows improved communication, both visually and verbally.
Watercolor blocks also minimize material waste. The high quality paper allows lifting mistakes out rather than wadding up paper and starting again. Students learn to persevere through composition challenges to work they care about.
