Since my students' English proficiency is limited, we are not able to read full length books; even short stories present a challenge. The Scholastic magazines are full of high interest yet accessible articles, which allow my students the ability to practice all of the language related skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Since the articles are short, we can practice each skill but still read each article in a reasonable amount of time. I am planning to read the articles with my students, familiarize ourselves with all the words, and then employ basic logical skills to decide which information is important enough to be in a summary. We will practice writing complete sentences on the personal dry erase boards, and the finished product will be displayed outside the classroom, on the poster pads, after the students present their summaries.
