My students are incredibly creative. We have done some amazing things in the classroom. We have created documentaries, super-heroes, comic-books, and many other artifacts in which my students express themselves. However, my classroom furniture (desks), restricts the students from being able feel comfortable in the classroom. Being located in urban Detroit, Michigan, we are limited as to what we can do to provide the classroom climate that is necessary to fit my students needs. Everything about our school is square, square classrooms, desks, lights, windows, but yet we constantly ask our students to think outside of the box. Right now my students are using desks that are falling apart. 70 percent of them are chipped and uneven. This is why I am asking for exercise ball chairs. They deserve a classroom that they can be excited about when they walk in the door. Flexible seating, such as exercise ball chairs allow students to move around without distracting other students. They are proven to increase engagement and involvement in the class. Moveable chairs also allow the students to control the classroom that they walk into every day. Having flexible seating available to my students would foster the classroom culture that every teacher dreams to create. A culture that fosters the creativity that all students love to show.
