These seating options will completely change the engagement within our classroom. Imagine as a 10-11 year old if you were given the flexibility to choose a seat in a space where you knew you could be successful. My goal is to move to a 100% flexible seating classroom. "Outside the windows of our classroom is a dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing world full of choices. How can we expect our students to solve problems and make choices independently if we constantly solve their problems and make their choices for them?" (Edutopia, 2016) In my research of flexible seating, this is a quote that has resonated with me. The students in my classroom are the oldest at our school and are so proud when given the ability to have choice and to take ownership in their learning style. They need the tools to solve problems and independently make choices that will help them be successful, and these seating options in our room would help them achieve that. The students will be able to move around the room and collaborate with other students in the room in flexible, calm spaces that allow for movement while working. The bike will be used by all students, but will especially benefit the students who need extra physical movement to maintain focus. Not only will the wobble chairs and exercise balls increase engagement, but will also increase core strength and increase posture and physical activity levels. Both allow for a little bounce/movement, while keeping the student in one space free of distracting others. This type of flexible seating will encourage teamwork, collaboration and problem solving and that will do wonders in our classroom community!
