In the spring we study the Mississippi and its role in beginning our fair city of St. Paul. We will be reproducing river scenes from early photos of St. Paul. We also compare the beginnings of our city with Ancient Egypt. The students begin to see the importance of water with civilization. We compare the Mississippi's and the Nile's impact on the people around them. We will find some turn -of-the-20th-century colorized photos of early St. Paul and duplicate them in watercolor. We will require that students do their own color mixing. The materials we need are nice watercolor sets, mixing palettes and quality watercolor paper. Our school does not have an art prep. As funds are limited, the visual arts usually takes a hit. I'm asking for basic watercolor sets. With these, I will do an art lesson on how to mix colors. As I have used watercolors in the past, I have found that the sets get wrecked easily. Using the palettes to do the mixing will prolong the life of the watercolor sets. I have also tried watercolors on regular construction paper in the past. The paper does not hold the water or the color well. Good watercolor paper is a must. We plan on entering the paintings in the Big River Art Contest this spring. The social studies standards are 1) I can identify St Paul as a river city. 2) I can compare and contrast daily life in three regions of the world in ancient times.
