In the past, I have used carpet squares and yoga mats to provide students with an opportunity to work away from their desk and collaboratively with their peers. Traditional desks in rows isolate students from each other. Flexible seating allows students to easily pair up, work in small groups, or discuss as a whole class. Students learn better when they have a chance to work together. Flexible seating provides an opportunity for movement and choice in a comfortable way. Flexible seating provides sensory stimulation aiding in the students' ability to focus and process information. In addition, it encourages students to share their space and learn to take turns sharing the flexible seating options.
