My project will provide five "Calm Down Kits" for each of my two schools that I support. Sometimes my students become extremely upset after an altercation with another student or a teacher. Sometimes they don't understand what is being asked of them due to their neuro-cognitive differences such as autism, and they become extremely agitated and may be acting out of control by yelling, kicking, throwing items, or hitting. When this happens, students are brought to me or a school administrator such as a Dean, Counselor or Principal, to calm down, talk about what happened, reflect on what went wrong, and figure out how to make things right. When students are extremely upset and emotional they aren't ready to talk. My project would provide them with the opportunity to use the items in the Calm Down Kits to help them to calm down-- brain teasers, sensory items, drawing supplies and building materials-- so that they can talk about what happened and learn from the incident. The items inspire curiosity and appeal to a students' senses. They will allow a student to distract and soothe themselves so they can get to a place emotionally where they are ready to process what happened.
