I am a speech and language therapist working with students with various disabilities. Since I now provide services remotely, my students and I have been really struggling with technical issues. I only have a DOE provided Chromebook which does not work well with Zoom and many other programs and apps. For example, during my sessions I must share my screen with the students in order to teach them reading, writing, exercise social and executive function skills. However, when I do that, my students cannot see me and I cannot see them. When working with students with autism and visually and hearing impaired children, it is imperative that we see each other for prompts, cues, and visual aids such as body language and lip movements. In addition, while I try to use more interactive materials such as iSL Collective, Pink Cat and others, my Chromebook does not save any of my settings and I need to go back to the beginning of the short story or film every time I have a session, which frustrates my already fragile students. I begged my administration to help me get a different computer, but was continuously denied. I spend on average 8 hrs a day on my computer: preparing, conducting and changing my sessions to better serve the students. When I turn my Chromebook on next day, all my information and hard work are gone and I have to start over again and my students do not get a continuity of the therapy. This MacBook would help to improve my communication and provide better opportunities for my students with severe disabilities to succeed in their learning process by allowing me create more continuous and interactive environment for them where I can create individualized virtual rooms and assignments.
