Reading is always my English classes least favorite time, but after they witnessed their own lexile scores increase over 150 points in one semester, they were sold on the power of reading!! By giving my students a library full of books that have their specific interests in mind, it will hopefully entice them to get past the first few pages. The reading inventory I gave my students has led me to the books that I have chosen. So many of the students are interested in sports and they have a difficult time finding books that may combine their interests with what they have to read about. I found over this past year that the students were much happier in reading when I allowed them to choose books they liked. I gave each of them the option to find a book on their own or to pick a book and I would purchase it for them. The end result was they enjoyed shopping for their own books and they were actually asking me daily if their book had arrived. I am willing to do whatever it takes to get their reading skills up to grade level and so I am looking forward to creating a library full of books they will want to read.
