This project started with a simple question to my students: "How do you feel about our classroom?" Naturally, my students had a long list of pluses and deltas to discuss. As a part of our school's Leader in Me program, we have been learning about how to create a leadership classroom so that we may better follow the 7 Habits of Happy Kids (and Highly Effective People). This process includes changing the emotional environment and the physical environment to inspire learning and leadership for the 21st century. The three areas of immediate focus my students choose for this project are: 1. Creating inspirational posters to mix in with the existing math posters (which they love!) around the room. 2. A chalk wall to write specific words of encouragement to their peers. 3. Flexible seating options. We can accomplish item 1 on our own, but we need help with items 2 and 3. Here's why my students think you should support our project: "I think inspiring messages would lighten up the room and they would encourage you to have a better day when you're feeling sad." -Devon "A chair would be not only a chair but also a learning tool because we all learn best in different ways. Learning is easier to do when we are comfortable and happy." -Chasity "People who work in stiff chairs for long hours suffer from back aches, but more comfortable seats provide excellent relaxation which eliminates mental tension and depression. These seats would be great to use when we do class meditation." -Noah "If we had comfy chairs I would be able to focus on learning more and less on how terrible this desk chair is. Also, the messages could help me stay motivated to do my work and be a leader all day." -Kemariah
