I am a special education teacher at an elementary school in a high-poverty area. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch and many of them come into school not having eaten dinner the night before. When these students come into my fourth grade classroom, they enter knowing virtually nothing about their state and its history. Some of the students live in a housing project named after a famous American, but when asked none of them can tell me anything about this person! In their neighborhood they hear all about violence and crime, but they learn little about history. It is amazing to watch these children and see their eyes light up as I teach them about things like George Washington crossing the Delaware and colonial punishments! They are fascinated by history and get extremely excited when I tell them that it is time for social studies.
