My 5th graders have a passion for reading. They enjoy read alouds, independent reading, and sharing books with others whether through picture books or chapter books. Having a diverse group of students, I, as their educator, strive to choose culturally relevant and representative books where my students can relate to the characters in the book. I strive in my quest to choose purposeful books that my students can connect to, whether in terms of cultural, language, ethnicity, race, or identity. My students deserve to see characters who share common identities as themselves in the literature they read. I have a dream that each and every one of my students have a dream for their future. In order to achieve this, I must create an environment that is conducive and supportive to their individuality. I strive to create an atmosphere where diversity and culture is acknowledged, celebrated, and viewed as a gift. These values are confirmed and reflected in the books that we read. I would love to conquer this dream of mine by providing my students with rich literature where children of all colors and family types face adversity yet still overcome odds. Where children achieve their big dreams, ambitious goals, and reach success. I am ecstatic to expand upon my classroom library with these engaging, authentic texts.
