In an effort to engage student interest and motivation, we are implementing a program called, "Genius Hour." Students will have time to explore/research an area of personal interest. Each student will generate high level questions about the topic and zoom in on an area to expand upon. When students are guiding their own learning, it is often more powerful and meaningful. It's important to dedicate time to individual exploration. We currently do not have enough devices to do this and have been working in teams. The students would be so grateful to have time to explore their own passions rather than brainstormed inquiry with groups. Once students finish their self-guided inquiry, they will present their passion projects to each other. This is modeled from Google's 80/20 ideal where employees spend 80% of their time working on company projects and 20% of their time working on personal passion projects. We want to bring their model to the 4th grade room! One of our school-wide goals for the year is to nurture and foster happiness in children. Kids report that they're often happiest when they have choice and self-direction!
