My students are amazing. They get up early to practice before school. Instead of learning all the latest music, they are focusing on big band and swing. This morning they got up and were at practice by 6:45am after staying up late working concessions at a football game to earn funds for our tour. They worked perfecting Glenn Miller hits from before WWII while other kids their ages were sleeping or listening to hiphop. Coming from a small town without private music lessons, or expensive equipment available to help the students, they have learned to work hard and make due with little. They are earning all the money for their "Sentimental Journey" by putting on dances and working concessions. They are willing to do all this for the benefit of senior citizens and veterans. Usually these tours include Disneyland or some other theme park, but my students want to take memories to seniors through our music instead of going on thrill rides. I think that speaks volumes about their character.
