During recess the kids typically engage in soccer which seems to bring them great enjoyment and excitement. Upon return from hurricane Harvey, we discovered that our students needed some form of normalcy. It was then that we decided to start our first soccer club. Most of the students who are involved in the soccer club come from lower socioeconomic statuses but are extremely resilient when it comes to trials and obstacles. We opened the club up to students in grades 4-5, which included boys and girls to provide them an outlet to express themselves in a way that is conducive to learning in a different setting. The students meet twice a week, where we discuss team-building skills, rules and regulations, soccer techniques, and problem solving techniques to help them be successful on and off the field. We are in need of goals, jerseys and soccer balls as our team has already found an eager opponent for the first game.
